1883-S Morgan Dollar

Following several widely available issues from the San Francisco Mint, the 1883-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) represents a scarce issue, particularly in mint state grades. The mintage of the coin was 6,250,000, but unlike other years large quantities failed to surface in later years leading to the conclusion that most were circulated around the time of issue or melted.

Prices for this issue stretch into the four figure range starting at the MS63 grade level. There are just a few dozen pieces graded by PCGS or NGC as MS65, with some of these issues selling for upwards of $20,000. A scant few pieces have graded higher. Perhaps the finest known example graded PCGS MS67 Proof-Like with CAC verification, sold for an astonishing $161,000 at auction in January 2009.
