The availability and price spreads for the 1886-S Morgan Dollar are very similar to the 1885-S, however the present issue is slightly scarcer and commands somewhat higher prices. The total mintage this year at the San Francisco Mint fell to 750,000 pieces.
Collectors can acquire examples of this coin in lower uncirculated grades for reasonable sums, but once again the prices jump and availability lessens at the gem level. Examples graded MS64 can be acquired for around $800 or more depending on quality. The prices for MS65 graded examples typically surpass $2,000.
The finest known 1886-S Morgan Dollars are a handful of pieces graded MS67 by the major grading services PCGS and NGC. One of the finest known examples which was pedigreed to Jack Lee sold for $27,600 at auction in January 2009.
