1897-S Morgan Dollar

The 1897-S Morgan Dollar is one of the more readily available issues of the series, with prices remaining relatively affordable across all grade levels. The total mintage at the San Francisco Mint reached 5,825,000 pieces.

Most examples of the coin are found well struck, with attractive luster. Proof like coins are encountered, but these have exhibit a weaker strike. Grading services PCGS and NGC have certified about 2,000 pieces in MS65, providing ample opportunity for a collector to cherry pick.

The finest known examples are two pieces graded PCGS MS68. One of these, which also received a CAC sticker, sold for $29,900 at auction in January 2009.
