1880-O Morgan Dollar

The 1880-O Morgan Dollar represented the second year of production for the new silver dollar at the New Orleans Mint. The mintage level almost doubled from the prior year, however examples in higher uncirculated grades still carry a premium. This is especially the case for examples which have been graded MS65, which can sell for $20,000 or more at auction. The major grading services have not graded any 1880-O silver dollars higher than this level.

An overdate variety is noted for this issue in the Red Book, where traces of the digits “79” are seen below “80”. However for most grade levels the 1880-O “80/79” carries only a slight premium above the standard appearance.
