The first year of the popular silver dollar series struck at the San Francisco Mint. The 1878-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) had a mintage just under ten million coins and remains relatively abundant in supply for collectors right up through gem grades. Most examples will display excellent luster and good eye appeal. Distribution of a large portion of the mintage took place well after production had taken place.
Unlike the multiple reverse styles that were used at the Philadelphia Mint this year, the “S” mint marked coins will all have the Type 2 Reverse defined by seven tail feathers with parallel top arrow feather.
