The 1885-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) is a somewhat more difficult issue of the series for collectors. The mintage at the San Francisco Mint saw another step down to 1,497,000 pieces. Silver dollar production figures at this mint would continue to decline in the following years.
For the present issue, examples in lower uncirculated grades are more or less available, however acquisition becomes more difficult and expensive at the gem level. The typical price for an MS64 graded piece can be around $600, but the price jumps to $1,500 or more when graded MS65.
Examples which exhibit a sharp strike are more desirable since many examples will be found weakly struck. Examples with Proof-Like surfaces command an even greater premium since the occurrence is infrequent for this issue.
