The 1887-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) is one of several San Francisco Mint silver dollars, which during successive years had relatively low mintages. From 1885 to 1889, mintage levels were above or below the million coin level, but none of the coins are particular rarities and remain relatively available. For each of these issues, including the 1887-S, gem graded coins do price in low thousands, but prices for MS63 grade levels fall back into the hundreds.
After a few years of higher production at the San Francisco Mint, the 1892-S Morgan Dollar and the 1893-S Morgan Dollar would emerge as semi-key and key date coins of the series.
