Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the 1899-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) had a mintage of 2,562,000 pieces. The lower mintage grants this issue medium rarity and a premium across all grade levels.
The major grading services have certified about 600 pieces in MS65 and these can usually be acquired for around $2,000. The issue tops out at the grade of MS67, with just nine pieces awarded this grade. An examples graded PCGS MS67 sold for $19,550 at auction in January 2011.
Some examples have been certified in mint state grades with the Proof-Like designation, with a smaller number in Deep Mirror Proof-Like.
