The 1902-O Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) shares a similar situation with many of the other New Orleans Mint issues of the series. The mintage level was on the higher side at 8,636,000 pieces, but more importantly, a vast number were held back in Treasury vaults and released to a later generation of collectors. This resulted in a proportionally larger number of uncirculated pieces than might be expected.
Collectors will encounter most examples of this issue weakly struck, with flat details at the center. With some patience and searching, more sharply struck pieces can be acquired for a premium quality collection.
The finest known 1902-O Morgan Dollars are graded MS67 by either PCGS or NGC.
