The 1891 Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) had a mintage of 8,693,556, above the average level for the series. However, gem graded examples, particularly ones with sharp strikes and above average luster, are uncommon. The price for this issue jumps significantly from MS64 to MS65 grade levels. Only a handful of coins exist that have received higher grades from the major services.
The Philadelphia Mint struck only 650 proof examples for the year. This was one of the lower mintages for proof strikings of the Morgan Dollars series, although it does not result in a pricing premium.
