The 1881-O Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) saw a total mintage of 5,708,000 pieces. Many of these silver dollars were released shortly after production and experienced circulation within the area. A sufficient number were also retained within storage, which preserved them for later generations.
Similar to other issues of the New Orleans Mint, this issue remains common through MS63 grades, but then becomes more difficult to locate at near gem and gem level grades. In fact, the highest graded pieces are only a small number graded MS66 by PCGS and NGC. The examples graded MS65 can sell for prices between $1,000 to $1,500 depending on eye appeal and other factors. An example graded PCGS MS66 recently sold for $22,425 at an auction held in January 2011.
