The 1888-S Morgan Dollar (Buy on eBay) was the second San Francisco minted coin of the series to have a mintage less than one million. There were 657,000 coins produced, a low that would eventually be broken by the key date 1893-S Morgan Dollar.
The lower mintage allows the coin to demand a premium in circulated grades, although mint state and gem examples carry less premium than might be expected. This was due to the release of large quantities in later years, as well as the Redfield hoard, which had thousands of 1888-S Morgan Dollars including many Proof-Like examples.
